
Rick grew up in Sydney. Maria was born in England and migrated to Sydney when she was 1 year old. They were both brought up in non-Christian homes. They became Christians during their teenage years and began attending Forest Alliance Church in 1978.
After they were married, both Rick and Maria attended the Alliance College of Theology. In 1989, they began ministry at Wynnum Manly Alliance Church Brisbane where Rick was an Associate Pastor. They planted Redlands Alliance church and pastored this congregation until the end of 1997.
The Bells moved to the Philippines in March 1998 and did two years of fulltime Tagalog language study. They have planted a cell church in partnership with a Filipino couple, Noel and Letlet Erese. The Bells have been extensively involving in holistic ministry of the local church, developing schools for the 'out of school' youth in this city and various small business projects to help the marginalized people of Manila. This has led to the planting of a new church called San Buena Compound, a community of twelve thousand people.
Rick and Maria have three children, Simon, Michael, and Lauren. Simon is studying in 3rd year at the University of Queensland and Lauren will graduate and return to Australia in June 2010 to begin her studies in teaching in Queensland.
